Five years ago, East Loddon P-12 College began a sister school arrangement with a Turkish school located in Canakkale, located just across the Dardanelles from the Gallipoli Peninsula. The college was keen for our students to have a real connection with the commemorations taking place for the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing and gain a better perspective of the Turkish side of the story. Our wonderful rural college travelled to Turkey in 2015 and 2018 and have hosted our Turkish friends in 2014 and 2016.
This exchange program is multi-faceted and has grown into an extremely positive educational opportunity, and something much bigger than first anticipated. We firmly believe that our fantastic ‘country kids’ gain so much from this program and it is vital that the college is able to continue strengthening this wonderful opportunity afforded to our students.
We are super excited to have 8 students committed to travelling to Turkey in April 2020. Zoe L, Zekie J, Trista W, Keira L, Georgia M, Holly S, Madison L and Connor C will also get to spend some time in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly known as Saigon) and visit places of wartime significance in Vietnam, including the Long Tan battlefield, before touring around Turkey and visiting the Gallipoli peninsula. Our group will then spend a two week homestay with families from our sister school in Cannakkale and celebrate Anzac Day together. Students will get to visit many different ancient and modern day attractions as well as immersing themselves in Turkish culture and getting a real feel for the country.
All families involved with this experience have committed to participating in a variety of fundraising efforts, with all monies raised going towards lowering the financial costs for all participants. Thank you to everyone for their ongoing support of this adventure in so many different ways!
