Our Curriculum

English & Literacy

Our students study literacy from Prep to Year 12 – because it is awesome! It is also compulsory but mostly it is awesome. Taking all of our students from novice to confident readers, writers, speakers and listeners is exciting work that our literacy teachers work hard to get better at every year.

At each year level, our students study stories which are a rich source of vocabulary, grammar, ideas and structures. Students go from picture story books and fables to novels. Over their time at East Loddon, students will read classic and contemporary literature through plays, poems, dystopias, historical, Shakespeare, fables, and short stories.

Students will show their understanding of these texts through written responses or spoken presentations. Written responses might be comprehension sentences, creative responses or analytical essays. Spoken presentations might be a speech, or a group creative response.

Students will also study current media issues via multimodal texts and develop the skills to form and opinion and express it persuasively. As students get older, they will also analyse the strategies authors use to convince their audience and, through this, encourage a critical lens when researching issues to form an opinion.

Public speaking is supported in class to encourage students to participate in the grade 3 and 4 public speaking competition and the grades 5 and 6 public speaking competition. Students compete in class and from there three students from each of these levels present to external judges.

We support students to develop their literacy skills through a range of programs:

  • P-2 begin each day participating in the Sounds-Write program.
  • 3-4 begin each day participating in the Spell-Ex program.
  • 5-6 participate in the Spelling Mastery Program four times per week.
  • 7-8 participate in the Spelling Mastery Program twice a week.
  • P-8 begin each day participating in fluency practice with decodables or set passages.

We celebrate English at East Loddon by participating in a range of events over the year:

  • Dorothea Mackellar Poetry Competition
  • National Simultaneous Storytime
  • Prime minister’s Spelling Bee
  • MS Readathon with a book parade organised with SRC
  • Bendigo Writers Festival

Visual Arts

Our art department is always a busy and exciting place to be, with our students from Prep-Year 8 completing tasks each year within a range of forms including modelling (i.e. ceramics, plasticine), construction (i.e. plaster, wire), drawing, painting, textiles, collage, printmaking, mixed media and digital art using iPads or laptops. During Years 9 and 10 students are given the opportunity to participate in elective classes such as Painting, Illustration, Street Art, Sculpture, Architecture, Printmaking, Ceramics and Graphic Design. Currently, VCE Art subjects on offer include Visual Communication and Design as well as Art Making and Exhibiting.

  • We have recently started using the Artsonia platform so students can create digital portfolios of their work throughout their schooling, which parents/carers are connected with via an app. This allows families to be connected to their child’s art education and add encouraging comments for them to see when their work is submitted.
  • Art education supports students to learn problem solving, communication and teamwork skills, responsibility, how to observe, to express yourself, to try something new, as well as there being therapeutic benefits when being creative.
  • At East Loddon, are lucky enough to have a brand new kiln room to fire our own ceramics works, and two fabulous purpose-built art rooms that are always full of student work, so students across all year levels see a variety of art and are inspired by each other!

Technology

Technologies gives students the opportunity to learn through hands-on designing, making, testing and improving. Students explore how products, systems and solutions are created to meet different needs, using a range of materials, tools, equipment, digital technologies and safe working practices.

Across Design and Technologies, students develop practical problem-solving skills through projects that may include prototyping, timber, construction, 3D printing, laser cutting, coding, textiles, food technologies and product design. Students are encouraged to think creatively, test ideas, make improvements and reflect on their learning.

Students also have the opportunity to explore specialist elective areas including Automotive, Building and Construction, Product Design, Food Technologies and Textiles. These subjects allow students to build practical skills, work safely, and develop confidence as they create solutions and final products for different purposes.
